The Theme Songs of Today: Reflecting on my Current Mood

Last night, Salih (my husband) and I had a more serious conversation about our future. Sometimes these conversations can be exhilarating and dreamy. But last night, it took on a different tone; it was real. As we process our next steps and desires, we are sometimes overwhelmed with the hurdles we must jump over, constraints we must respect and the latent time involved with each potential path. Because of the current political situation in Turkey and America, the realities of our cross-cultural relationship can feel particularly intense. But this song totally captures the romantic attitude of trusting in your partner and relationship as you move forward through life's challenges.

I know it is is an old song but I just love May I Have This Dance (song below) because it instantly puts me in a great mood. For some reason, it always reminds me of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" - not because of the melody or musicality but for the singing voice of Francis, the lead singer. Anything related to Peter Gabriel reminds me of my sweet Mom and thus reinforces the loop of happiness. I play it a lot while I am in the shower or driving in the car - and yes, I am singing along without a care in the world, even when I know that the Turkish men in the car next to me are probably laughing. You do you, boo.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to try? Why haven’t you?
